What kind of man doesn’t name his dog?

Captivating, immersive and above all honest, this portrait reveals the incredible character and life of one man in the rural Chinese Mulao village of XiaZhai.

Historically very poor farmers, the Mulao people were an ethnicity steeped in language, and culture. Now, influenced by Han and Modern Chinese they have lost almost all their tradition. When the prospects of city life and financial gain draw the vast majority of young people away from the mountains, village leader, Luo Zhiwen, puts the villagers’ prosperity far beyond his own.

With inspiring generosity and hospitality, Uncle Luo welcomed the director and crew to stay, live and eat with his family in their small self-built house whilst filming. This priceless intimacy and insight leaves it mark both on both the story and those involved.
